With the arrival of digital design tools such as CLO3D my job became a lot more exciting. You can try out new shapes and materials digitally, achieving a garment with a look that is very close to reality. Less prototyping rounds are needed which results in a way more efficient development process. 

A digital showroom is also possible, which limits the need for digital samples. You can just give your clients access to your digital showroom with a booklet of sample materials to still get the handfeel of the materials.
